George W. Carver
When I was around twelve years old, a Russian neighbor called, Mrs. Sauchuck gave me a book – I still have it. It was a biography about George Washington Carver: one of the small, bright violet stamps on the second row, the second from left, depicts him.
The book from 1944 was called George Washington Carvery by Rackham Holt (see review). It’s a light read with a few illustrations like books were from the 1940s and 50s. It talked about his childhood and education, including his years in college. It was a mild success story and not much drama. However, there was something about the story and Carver that I enjoyed.
I read the book thoroughly; some parts I read more than once. I admired Carver very much and I identified with him because he was an intelligent and considerate person who surprised everyone: He did well despite how people treated him. As a boy, I imagined that very much to be my future.
Note
This page has a good many stamps on it. I prefer them arranged with many stamps like this, and not lots of pages with only a few on each. I like Leuchtturm, but I feel that on some pages they spread out the stamps oo much – maybe to sell more album pages.
Contains 20 spots: own 20 – 20 unused, 0 used.
Page is finished.
