Definitives
These are what passes for definitives at the United Nations. Most countries, like Italy and the U.S., when they issue definitives, they’re smaller – 22 mm wide by 26 mm high, or about ¾ by 1 inch. I like that size for envelops and especially for postcards. The U.N. always goes bigger, maybe to be more noticable. The one at the bottom with the plain, blue design that looks like a definitive is 28 mm wide by 34 mm high. That’s about as small as they go.
Note
Although these were fairly common, these stamps took me a while to acquire. I didn’t start collecting U.N. stamps until 1975, so I wasn’t able to get them directly from the U.N. Post Office in New York. I’m not sure why they weren’t easily found at dealers. The post office printed over two million of the one at the bottom. It’s probably because U.N. stamps have fallen out of favor with collectors since they over saturated the market with stamps. Still, I like them.
