U.N. Development Program
The U.N. Development Programme tries to help countries eliminate poverty by improving and stabilizing economic growth, as well as human development. Their goal is for these countries to become self-sufficient in their growth and prosperity.
The UNDP was founded in 1965, just two years before the issuance of the two stamps at the top of this album page commemorating the agency. It’s funded by contributions from member states and is not part of the budget and expenditures of the U.N.
The agency has worked on improving sanitation and irrigation systems, energy programs, and other key aspects of developing countries. They’ve also been instrumental in a major reduction in small arms and other weapons in many countries to reduce greatly crime and violence. They were also involved in the prevention and treatment against the HIV/AIDS virus around the world. All of these factors can slow human and economic development and are therefore in keeping with their mandate.
Note
Most of these stamps aren’t very interesting. I like the ones on the top row – the ones commemorating the U.N. Development Programme. That’s why I wrote about that agency. I also like the one of the Marc Chagall stained-glass window, the stamp in the center. I write about the souvenir sheet version of it a few pages after this (see Marc Chagall Window).
