60th Anniversary
Only two countries were added since the last five-year enniversary of the United Nations. Both were added in September of 2002. One was Switzerland. I’m not sure why it took them so long to join. Perhaps they wanted to continue their brand as a neutral state. However, the U.N. has had offices in Geneva for many years. That seems embarassing to host the U.N., but not join. One day I’ll find the story behind the delay and the story behind the decision to join.
The other new member was Timor-Leste, located in the Pacific Ocean in Southeast Asia, north of Australia and south east Indonesia on the eastern half of the island, Timor. It’s name seems redundant, but has some logic to it. Timor in the Malay language means, east. It was named as such because it was the big island to the east. The island is composed of two nations, West Timor in the west and Timor-Leste in the east. The word L’est is Portugese, which is an official language of the nation, and means the east. So it’s name is basically, The Eastern part of the big island in the East. It’s all relative.
Note
Although I’m not a fan of souvenir sheets, I do appreciate these anniversary ones. I think the U.N.’s five year anniversaries are worth making a fuss to celebrate. I should also note that I appreciate that Leuchtturm didn’t put this souvenir sheet a page by itself. The layout isn’t great on this album page, but at least it reduces the number of pages.
