Forests Survival

U.N. New York, Page 88.1 (BL-1)

The U.N. Environment Programme began in 1972 with the intent to coordinate agencies and others at the U.N. when environment problems arise. They are to determine solutions to problems such climate and specific ecosystem changes. They do this in many ways, including researching and publishing documents on the latest environmental science, working with member states to make environmentalal changes, and to work on environmental agreements among nations.

The U.N.E.P. and the Food and Agriculture Organization determined that the world is losing millions of hectares of forests and forestland each year. Forests of the world contain over sixty thousand species of trees. Seventy-five percent of bird species live in the forests, along with eighty percent of amphibian species, and nearly seventy percent of all mammal species. Losing forests each year will not only cause the loss of many species of animals, but will also lead to a loss of fresh air and cause atmospheric problems.

Note

The pair of stamps in the middle of this page are meant to bring attention to the need for forest conversation. The stamp at the bottom is to commemorate the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It was issued along with a sourvenir sheet. See the next page for more on this.
