Washington

Bureau of Engraving, Page 35 (GR-1)

There are plenty of stamps depicting George Washington, the first U.S. president. U.S. stamps with his image on them are probably more than any one else. However, this series of Washington stamps in the first three rows of t his album page are the best. They’re to commemorate the bicentenial of his birth.

These stamps, showing George Washington at various ages and various points in his career, are so well done. Clair Aubrey Huston and Alvin Meissner designed the stamps based on famous paintings and statues of Washington. The names of the artists for each painint is listed under each entry in the table below.

Incidentally, these bicentenial stamps were issued in 1932, which suggests he was born in 1732, but that isn’t true by some calendars. Washington was born on February 11, 1731 based on the Julian calendar, which was in use at the time of his birth. In 1752, England and its colonies switched to the Gregorian calendar. As a result, Washington’s birthday became February 22, 1732.

Note

As mentioned elsewhere, I’ve started buying U.S. stamps. It wasn’t until recently that I finally completed this set of Washington stamps. I’m very happy about that.
