King’s Jubilee

Italian Colonies, Page OG-2 (GR-2)

The design of the stamps on this page show the king wearing a military dress uniform, including several medals on his chest. It was designed by Carlo Parmeggiani.

The stamps were in celebration of the royal jubilee of Vittorio Emanuele III – twenty-five years as king of the Kingdom of Italy. I’m not sure the that residents of Oltre Giuba care about his celebration or him – other than the Italian colonists.

St. Francis

One of my favorite saints is St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint animals and nature. He and St. Catherine of Siena were also patron saints of Italy. St. Francis founded the Order of Friars Minor, the Order of Saint Clare (i.e., the Poor Clares), and the Third Order of Saint Francis.

The bottom set of stamps on this album page are in commemoration of the six-hundred year anniversary of the death of St. Francis. They depict him, the Basillica of St. Francis and San Damiano Church and Convent, both in Assisi, Italy.

Note

The stamps of the king aren’t in catalog number order. I should probably reorder them, the three with perforation 11 together, then the three with perforation 13½ next – sorting that grouping by face amount. Instead, I ordered them by face amount first, then by perforation. I thought the ones of the same amount and same colors would look better. You can see how this will look on Eritrea page that has all of these stamps: Royal Jubilee. Now that I see them like this, I’m not so sure. I think catalog number order would be better.

Contains 11 spots: own 9 – 9 unused, 0 used.
