Tripoli

Foreign Offices, Page TR-1 (GR-3)

Tripoli has the same name in Italian, which also uses Tripoli di Occidente for the city. In the early 1900s the city belonged to the Ottoman Empire. Italy, however, had long claimed that Tripoli fell within its zone of influence. Italy also believed it had the right to keep order in the state.

On September 29, 1911, Italy declared war on the Ottomans, citing the need to protect its citizens in Tripoli from the Ottoman government. Italy also announced that it intended to annex Tripoli. This was the start of the Italo-Turkish War.

The war ended with the Treaty of Ouchy in 1912, also known as the Treaty of Lausanne. Under it, the Ottomans acknowledged Italian sovereignty over Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, though the caliph kept his religious authority. Italy officially granted autonomy to the region after the war, but gradually occupied it. As a result, the Italian presence in Tripoli grew from a claim into real control.

Note

These stamps were used at the Italian post office located in Tripoli before the start of World War I, before Italy began to expand their empire in the 1920s and the region became a colony. See my Tripolitania album for stamps during it’s Italian colonial times.
