MacArthur

Colorful Years, Page 87 (RE-2)

Douglas MacArthur was a U.S. General of the Army (i.e., a five-star general) during World War II. He was assigned to the forces in the Pacific Ocean and surrounding area. After Japan surrendered, MacArthur oversaw the occupation of Japan and was instrumental its new constitution which set up a democracy and prohibited military aggression. During the Korean War, he was in charge initially of the United Nations Command. Because of conflicts with President Harry Truman, he was removed from command.

As I mentioned at the start of my U.S. collection, when I was twelve, my step-father’s friend Chuck, who was a stamp collector, showed me his collection. He gave me the MacArthur stamp shown here to start mine. I’m not sure why he gave me that one in particular, and only one stamp. Nevertheless, seeing his collection and having that stamp was enough to get me started.

In my mid-twenties, Chuck visited my house and I showed him my collection, which had progressed fairly well in the nearly fifteen years – I wish he could see it today. I felt proud and pleased showing it to him. I told him how he got me started with this one stamp. He remembered showing me his collection, but didn’t remember giving me the stamp. His comment was, “Well, I’ll be…”

Note

Almost all of these stamps are well designed. I like them, in particular I like the pair at the top celebrating a decade of Apollo missions. I also like very much all of the stamps on the third row except for the one in the center of a star.
