Fascist Youth
Those who are familiar with Hitler and the Nazis will probably also know about the Nazi Youth. It was a method to indoctrinate future generations of children into the Nazi philosophy and to prepare them to fight in the coming war to conquer and dominate the world. Mussolini and the Fascists in Italy had a similar program.
As part of the process of raising children in the fascist ideals, the Fascist government organized an exhibition from June to September 1937 called, La Mostra Nazionale delle Colonie Estive e dell’Assistenza all’Infanzia – the National Exhibition of Summer Camps and Child Care. It was located in Rome at the Circus Maximus, where chariot races were held during reign of the Roman Empire.
The purpose of the exhibition was to provide information and advice to parents and teachers on how to teach children to become good fascists. This included the re-education of juveniles, older children.
The stamps on this album page were to commemorate that exhibition. Notice the adorable children depicted meant to encourage parents to join this movement: one child is making the fascist salute, another boy is standing by two towering fascists, and a girl is holding a rifle. It makes me wonder what exactly they taught and demonstrated at this expo.
Note
This album page is complete with all unused stamps. I’m pleased to have it finished, which I accomplished recently since they don’t cost much. The Nazi and Fascist movements were always a little fascinating to me when I was a kid in school. We never covered it in history class: it was contained in the last chapters of our books, which we never reached before the school year ended – and the following year we would start over.
Contains 16 spots: own 16 – 16 unused, 0 used.
Page is finished.
