U.N. Day
The stamps on the third row were issued in celebration of United Nations Day. It’s a day celebrating the anniversary of the U.N. on October 24 of each year, the anniversary of the official date of the U.N. Charter.
The purpose of U.N. Day is to make the works and purpose of the United Nations known around the world. Starting in 1971, they’ve been trying to get member states to make it a national holiday in their respective countries. I don’t know if it’s caught on – or if any country has observed it yet. But I think it’s a neat idea.
Note
The stamps on the top row are excellent. I like the design. They’re part of a set of stamp issued in New York, Geneva, and Vienna. They commemorating the Habitation Year, which is described on the Habitation Year page.
The stamp in the middle of the third row depicts Trygve Lie, a Norwegian politican who was the first Secretary General of the U.N. See the Trygve Lie album page for more information on him.
Contains 9 spots: own 9 – 9 unused, 0 used.
