Johannesburg

U.N. New York, Page 2002.2 (BL-2)

The World Summit on Sustainable Development was held in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2002. These meetings were held ten years after the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro (see Earth Summit).

The leaders of the member states met this time to discuss sustainable development organizations. However, the U.S. president, George Bush opposed the summit, although he did send then Secretary of State, Colin Powell to speak briefly. The president’s main objection was to a focus on global warming, a scientific fact that he and other conservatives deny and say is false. As a result of the U.S., the world’s largest polluter, not participating in the summmit, it wasn’t as effective as it could have been.

Still, they agreed on what is known as the Johanesburg statement in which they pledge to focus on “the worldwide conditions that pose severe threats to the sustainable development of our people, which include: chronic hunger; malnutrition; foreign occupation; armed conflict; illicit drug problems; organized crime; corruption; natural disasters; illicit arms trafficking; trafficking in persons; terrorism; intolerance and incitement to racial, ethnic, religious and other hatreds; xenophobia; and endemic, communicable and chronic diseases, in particular HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.”

Note

The layout of the stamps on this album page are unappealing. I don’t like two vertical strips like this. I couldn’t find the stamps altogether like Leuchtturm intended. Instead, I have them in pairs. I may one day design a replacement page with the stamp distributed in pairs or singles. I think that would look better.

Contains 8 spots: own 8 – 8 unused, 0 used.
