Francesco Ferrucci

Occupations, Page CR-4 (GR-3)

Francesco Ferruccio, born in the late 15th century, was a soldier for the Medici family in Florence. He was an irreverant and audacious leader who successfully led attacks on Florence and Venice, as well as threatened the Papal States. Over the centuries, he became a legend and was revered by the Fascists in the 1930s. Even his death, resulting from being wounded in battle, was celebrated.

These eight stamps commemorating Ferruccio depict the Siege of Volterra, and his death when he was killed by Fabrizio Maramaldo.

Note

These stamps aren’t very impressive, especially considering the same design was used for several Italian occupied islands. They’re hardly worth having on a separte page. I may redesign the page and put them together with the ones on the next page, the Giuseppe Garibaldi page – like I did with the Dodecanese album pages. You can see a sample of this on the first one, the Calimno page.
