10th Anniversary

U.N. New York, Page 55.2 (BL-1)

This souvenir sheet was issued to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the United Nations. In the first five years, fifty-eight countries joined the United Nations – half of them on the first day, but the rest spread over many months and the first five years. From November 1950 to October 1955, though, there were no new member states. That must have been discouraging to Dag Hammarskjöld, the Secretary General for many of those years.

Note

As I mentioned in my U.S. album (see Bird Treaty), I don’t see the point of souvenir sheets. I can’t imagine someone using a souvenir sheet for postage. At least this one has three stamps that may be removed and used. These stamps are the same ones as those on the previous page – on the second to last row of that page. Those were issued, though, in sheets. They’re not taken from a souvenir sheet like this one.

This is generally the most expensive United Nations stamp, which is why I did’t have one until recently. Of course, it’s actually a souvenir sheet containing three stamps. Still, almost all U.N. stamps in mint condition cost very little: less than fifty cents each. Whereas this one costs about one-hundred fifty dollars these days. For other issues around this time they produced over a million copies. For this one they made only about two-hundred fifty thousand. But I managed to find one at a much lower price.
