East Timor
East Timor, or rather Timor-Leste is located in the Pacific Ocean in Southeast Asia, north of Australia and south east Indonesia on the eastern half of the island, Timor. With fifty-seven hundred square miles of land, it has a population of about one-million three-hundred fifty thousand. It has been inhabited for over forty-two thousand years and was a Portugese colony from the 16th Century until 1975. It became a member of the U.N. in September 2002.
It’s name seems redundant, but has some logic to it. Timor in the Malay language means, east. It was named as such because it was the big island to the east. The island is composed of two nations, West Timor in the west and Timor-Leste in the east. The word L’est is Portugese, which is an official language of the nation, and means the east. So it’s name is basically, The Eastern part of the big island in the East. It’s all relative.
Note
The two stamps at each end of the second row of this album page commemorate East Timor joining the U.N. With perhaps less fan fare is the stamp in the middle of the same row. It commemorates Switzerland joining finally – despite having U.N. offices in Geneva since 1946, and being the headquarters for its predecessor, the League of Nations since the early 1930s.
