Royal Jubilee
The design of the stamps on this page with the king wearing a military dress uniform, including several medals on his chest, is by Carlo Parmeggiani, like the ones on the Kingdom Definitives page. This stamp design was in celebration of the Vittorio Emanuele III’s royal jubilee: twenty-five years as king of the Kingdom of Italy. That seems to be why he was in dress uniform for the portrait.
A Marvelous Saint
One of my favorite saints is St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint animals and nature. He and St. Catherine of Siena were also patron saints of Italy. St. Francis founded the Order of Friars Minor, the Order of Saint Clare (i.e., the Poor Clares), and the Third Order of Saint Francis.
The last three rows of stamps on this album page are in commemoration of six-hundred year anniversary of the death of St. Francis. They depict him, the Basillica of St. Francis and San Damiano Church and Convent, both in Assisi, Italy.
Note
On this album page, I have all of the stamps – all unused. It took quite a while to get to this point. For the set of St. Francis stamps, I had some of them and had to find a dealer selling them individually – rather than buy a complete set and discard the duplicate ones. For the top two sets of the king in uniform, it just took time to find the sets for sale at prices I could afford, and to wait until I have the cash to buy them. So now it’s complete and that makes me feel good. Soon the pages around it will be complete and I will then have several complete pages in sequence, which is even nicer.
Contains 14 spots: own 14 – 14 unused, 0 used.
Page is finished.
