Overrun Countries
These stamps from 1943 to 1944 show the flags of thirteen countries that were conquered in World War II by the Axis Powers (i.e., Germany, Italy, and Japan). They were Albania, Austria, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, France, Greece, Korea, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, and Yugoslavia. Although these stamps were issued during the time of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, these were printed by the American Bank Note Company, the previous printer of stamps, because they required special, multiple color printing. The Bureau was not yet doing that kind of printing and would not do so that I can see until the 1950s.
Note
This page is complete. I’ve been unsure for a long time, though, as to whether I like these stamps. They have kind of an eerie was quality about them with a grayscale frame and a multi-color flag in the center of each. Sometimes I like them and other times I find them irritating. It’s like how I feel about women with bangs: it’s both attractive and disturbing to me.
Contains 13 spots: own 13 – 13 unused, 0 used.
