West New Guinea
At the end of the 18th Century, Indonesia became a colony of the Netherlands. During World War II, it was taken by Japan. In 1945, after Japan fell, Indonesia declared its independence. However, the Netherlands fought to deny them independence and to reclaim them as a colony. In 1949, though, the Netherlands acknowledged their independence.
The Netherlands had control of West New Guineam, though, and claimed it as their possession. Indonesia argued that it was part of their country – by proximity and geographically. The Netherlands argued that most of the residents were Dutch, not indigenous people. The Netherlands wanted to maintain control until the people could decide their own fate, even if they chose independence from both countries.

Note
These stamps are Dutch stamps overprinted with UN TEA. They aren’t very valuable, but were difficult for me to find. I bought them from a dealer in Australia. He charged me too much for them, but I couldn’t find them anywhere else.
