Climate Souvenirs

In early December 2008, the U.N. Climate Change Conference was held in Poznań, Poland. The conference was held to negotiate a replacement for the Kyoto Protocol, which was held in 1992. At Kyoto, they agreed that all countries would work to reduce carbon emissions due to global warming. However, it didn’t have enough details for target emissions or consumption. It proved unfair to countries that produced products that result in greenhouse gases, but did nothing to discourage those who consumed those products. As a result, not enough countries ratified it.

The Poznań conference sought to address those concerns and inequalities. They also discussed making more funds available for poorer countries to adapt their systems to produce less greenhouse gases. Also, new technology for carbon capture and storage was discussed and how to deploy it. They mainly worked on planning, agreeing on what each member would be do to prepare for Copenhagen conference to be held in 2009.

Note

To me, there’s little value in having one souvenir sheet for a cconference, let along two. And then to issue six plate blocks for the same conference is absurd. It I had more integrity in my collecting, I would have thrown away these album pages and never bought the stamps for them. But there is an obsession that comes with collecting. It’s difficult not to include a set of thirty-two stamps.

What’s worse is trying to write four pages of descriptions. I didn’t feel like say that much about the same set of stamps. That’s why I put all four of these album pages on one web page.

Footnotes

  • Spot refers to the postion of the stamp on the album page (e.g., 3.2 indicates row 3, position 2).

  • Amt. is an abbreviation for the face amount of the stamp.

  • Own indicates the stamp status: ✓ for unused; ✗ for used or canceled; ⭑ signifies I ordered one; ; ✨ indicates it was bought recently; ✠ means an auction bid is pending; and ◎ is used, and it costs too much for unused.

  • To search by catalog number, go to the search box and enter it in the catalog number box. However, it’s a bit broken; I need to fix it.
