Italian Colonies
Starting in 1869, only a few years after the unification, the Kingdom of Italy sought to expand beyond the Italian peninsula and the islands of Sardegna and Sicily. They wanted to build an Italian Empire.
They started with the purchase of Assab, which was part of Eritrea. In 1882 they took over all of Eritrea and made it a colony. In 1889 they conquered Somalia, making it a coloney, too.
They were fairly content with those two colonies until World War I when the then king, Vittorio Emanuele III along with Mussolini pushed for more territory. They started seizing and annexing territory across the Adriatic Sea, in Greece, and off the coast of Turkey. Some of these acquisitions became colonies, some remained only military occupations.
These album pages include stamps from the colonies of the Kingdom of Italy. The next album covers Italian Occupations.
Note
This is a new section or album for me. My main album pages were produced by Leuchtturm (i.e., Lighthouse). They make excellent products. For album pages, they use high quality paper. They organize and layout the stamps well, top notch printing and exact stamp mounts that don’t obstruct the view of the stamps. Unfortunately, they don’t make album pages for the various states of the Italian peninsula prior to the Kingdom of Italy. They also don’t make album pages for the colonies of the Italian Kingdom.
There are other producers of stamp albums that make these two albums, but I’ve decided on Leuchtturm and want to stick with them: use the same album binders and paper, as well as the same style of printing. For the Italian States, I designed my own album pages, similar to Leuchtturm pages, in Adobe PhotoShop and printed them on blank pages I bought from Leuchtturm – and used their binders. Now I’m doing the same for Italian colonies.
There are many such places and I don’t yet know all of them and what was their status. It will take some research to learn about these various places and the situation in relation to Italy during those times – primarily from around 1911 to about 1943, when it all ended with the Kingdom. So far I’ve added pages for Eritrea and recently for Libya. I need to add Somalia and others.
I have many stamps from these places, but not all of them – not all of these places and definitely not all of the stamps from any of these places. But I’m piecing together the information I need to create the album pages. In time, I hope to have a full set of album pages, and most of the pages full of stamps. It’s a major addition to my on-line and in-print stamp collection, but that’s part of the fun.
