Medicinal Plants

U.N. New York, Page 90.1 (BL-1)

The U.N. Industrial Development Organization started in 1966 to help accelerate the industrialization of developing countries, especially those who were newly decolonization – but had no industry.

The two stamps at the start of the second row of this album page, the stamps with images of flowering plants are meant to make the public aware of the work of the U.N.I.D.O. In particular, that the world can use the wealth of flora in natural or cultivated forms to provide effective pharmaceuticals. And without them, the world would be at a loss for cures of future diseases and other illnesses.

Note

The stamps of medicinal plants are very nice. I don’t like the ones on the top row related to AIDS. That issue of stamps is covered elsewhere (see Aids). The stamps on the third row commemorate the forty-fifth anniversary of the U.N. They were issued along with a souvenir sheet. See the next page for more on that.

The last stamp is for the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), the predecessor of what’s now called the World Trade Organization (WTO). That’s not covered on any other page here, but I will eventually add one.

Contains 9 spots: own 9 – 9 unused, 0 used.
Page is finished.

Footnotes

  • Spot refers to the postion of the stamp on the album page (e.g., 3.2 indicates row 3, position 2).

  • Amt. is an abbreviation for the face amount of the stamp.

  • Own indicates the stamp status: ✓ for unused; ✗ for used or canceled; ⭑ signifies I ordered one; ; ✨ indicates it was bought recently; ✠ means an auction bid is pending; and ◎ is used, and it costs too much for unused.
