Satelites
The U.N. Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) was established in 1958 – after the Soviets launched Sputnik I in 1957. UNOOSA is part of the U.N. Secretariat. It promotes and coordinates peaceful activities in outer space. It also has established laws and regulations for space activities, and assists developing countries in taking advantage of resulting advancements in science and technology for their socioeconomic development. When this first started, it probably seemed like a useless office that would have nothing to do.
Related to all of this, UNOOSA organizes Conferences on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, known as UNISPACE Conferences – which are held at their headquarters in Vienna. The first conference was in 1968, on their tenth anniversary. The second was fourteen years later in 1982. The third, UNISPACE III was in 1999. The two stamps at the top and the souvenir sheet commemorate that conference.
Note
When I was a kid, I would have liked these stamps showing two satelites with what seems to be a not very tight hurricane in background, and ships just out of range of the storm seeming to be unconcerned by their proximity to danger.
