Postage Due & Air

Italian Colonies, Page EC-22 (GR-2)

These postage due stamps are a newer from 1934. They’re bland, albeit brighter in colors compared to postage due stamps from previous decades – from the peninsula. At their center is the crest for the king and the house of Savoy. But the royal crest is flanked by fasces, the symbol of Mussolini’s National Fascist Party – much like the key is hemmed in by the Fascists.

Art Show Air Mail

The set of stamps at the bottom, the large stamps on the last two rows, commemorate the second International Colonial Art Show that was held in Naples from October 1, 1934 to January 31, 1935. It was an art exhibition of art work showing the Italian colonization of Africa, which included Venetian paintings from the 15th Century. It’s purpose was to promote the idea that Italy having colonies in Africa has been around a long time and only natural.

The exhibition was held in Naples because the African Society of Italy (Società Africana d’Italia) was based in Naples and they sponsored it. Plus, the local government sought to promote Naples as the primary port for trade with the Italian colonies in Africa.

Note

I have all of these stamps except for the last two, higher denomination postage due stamps. I’m not sure why they weren’t sold to me as part of the set of stamps I bought. Probably because they’re more expensive. I hope I can find just these two for sale.
