Communications Year

U.N. New York, Page 83.1 (BL-1)

In 1983, the top two stamps were issued to commemorate the World Communications Year. It was meant to bring attention to the fact that inadequate communications is a hindrance to economic and social progress for many countries. It was the hope that a world communications network might be delveloped so that no one is isolated from the international community.

The world wide web was started six years later, and accessible by the public in 1993. Also, in the 1980s and early 1990s, email was made available to the public. In recent years, basic mobile telephones and communications services are sold at a low cost so that most people are now part of local and international communications. I don’t know how much the World Communications Year helped, but its goals were achieved eventually.

Note

The two stamps at the beginning of the second row are meant to bring attention to efforts for safer maritine activities. See the Secure Seas page for more information on that issue.

The two at the end of the same row are for the U.N. Conference on Trade and Development. See the Trade & Development page.

The pair on the third row are about the twenty-fifth anniversary of the U.N. Declaration of Human rights. There are many album pages about it, but to start see Human Rights Decree.

For information on the last stamp, see World Food.

Contains 9 spots: own 9 – 9 unused, 0 used.
