Propaganda

Italy in Transition, Page PG 3 (GR-1)

These were special stamps used in northern Italy, after the king surrendered to the Allies. The king’s face is overprinted with either the words Repubblica Sociale Italiana (i.e., Italian Socialist Republic), or the Fascist symbol, or with both. They were probably saying then that the RSI is in charge and the king has been overruled.

The right half of these stamps has images of weapons with a propaganda slogans directed at the soldiers who would use these stamps. The ones with the image of modern naval ships and their guns say in Italian, La disciplina é arma di vittoria, which means, Discipline is a weapon of victory.

The stamps showing an artilery canon along with a paratrooper and other elements say, Armi e cuori devono essere tesi verso la meta, a Mussolini quote which translates to Weapons and hearts must be directed towards the goal – not very inspiring. The stamps with pictures of airplane bombers say, Tutto e tutti per la vittoria, which is Everything and everyone for victory.

The last stamps with a helmet, a knife, and an axe head says, La vittoria sarà del tripartito, meaning, The victory will be for the Tripartite. This refers to the Tripartite Pact, which is the agreement among the three nations of the Axis Powers: Germany, Italy, and Japan. Maybe each of the three items in the drawing represents a different country: Italy would be the axe.

Note

These stamps are overprints of stamps from the Kingdom: see the War Propaganda page. There were first overprinted by the German puppet state in 1943 after the kingdom switched to the Allied Forces’ side, with the initials GNR overprinted – Guardia Nazionale Repubblicana (i.e., National Republican Guard): see the Socialist Propaganda page.

The single stamp at the bottom can be very pricey, but I found one for only ten euros. It’s fairly well centered, as you can see, but isn’t perforated on two sides. That apparently decreases its value for some reason. It doesn’t matter to me, though.

Contains 13 spots: own 13 – 13 unused, 0 used.
Page is finished.
