Umberto II
The crown prince in 1930, Umberto II married Maria José of Belgium – who became the last Princess of Piedmont. In May 1946, they became king and queen of Italy, but for only about a month before King Umberto II abdicated with the start of the Italian Republic.
The three stamps at the top depict the royal couple, showing them at the time of their marriage. The stamps were issued in 1930, sixteen years before their coronation as king and queen.
Ferruccio
Francesco Ferruccio, born in the late 15th century, was a soldier for the Medici family in Florence. He was an irreverant and audacious leader who successfully led attacks on Florence and Venice, as well as threatened the Papal States. Over the centuries, he became a legend and was revered by the Fascists in the 1930s. Even his death, resulting from being wounded in battle, was celebrated.
The five stamps in the second set that commemorate Ferruccio depict the Siege of Volterra, and his death when he was killed by Fabrizio Maramaldo.
Agriculture Institute
The Italian Colonial Agriculture Institute was founded in 1904 in Florence to promote and improve agricultural methods. Initially, they were very active in the Italian colonies, but over time they became involved in agriculture throughout Italy, especially in Sicily – as well as in other parts of the world where Italian were in large numbers involved in farming (e.g., in Brazil and Argentina).
Note
Although these stamps are each monochrome, collectively they’re so colorful. Even the one that’s basically black looks good in the group. The last set looks good too, even though it has a fascist, Aryan superior race feel to the characters depicted.
