Olympics
The souvenir sheet at the bottom of this album page were issued in commemoration of the one-hundredth anniversary of the modern Olympics. The first modern Olympics were played in 1896: the Summer Games in Athens, Greece where the Olympics started in 8th Century b.c.e and lasted until the 4th Century c.e. The fir modern Winter Games were held in Chamonix, France in 1924.
For the one-hundredth anniversary of the modern games, the 1996 Summer Games were held in Atlanta in the U.S. The artwork for the sourvenir sheet and related U.N. stamps were painted by LeRoy Neiman, a U.S. painter who was fairly popular at the time for expressionist paintings of sports atheletes and sporting events. I despise his artwork.
Note
The first set of stamps is part of the Endangered Species series. Previous ones mostly depicted animals and birds. You can see another set of them and read more about them on the Endangered Species Trade page in the New York album.
The set of stamps in the middle of the page are relaed to the City Summit in Istanbul. See the Habitat II page in the Geneva album for more on it.
