Space Week
Starting in 1999, World Space Week is an annual event held from October 4 through 10. Those dates were chosen as significant ones in space exploration history: the first commemorates the Soviet craft, Sputnik 1, the first satellite launch on October 4, 1957; the second commemorates the signing of the Outer Space Treaty October 10, 1967.
Fiftieth Annniversary
The U.N. Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) was established in 1958 – after the Soviets launched Sputnik I in 1957. UNOOSA is part of the U.N. Secretariat. It promotes and coordinates peaceful activities in outer space. It also has established laws and regulations for space activities, and assists developing countries in taking advantage of resulting advancements in science and technology for their socioeconomic development. When this first started, it probably seemed like a useless office that would have nothing to do.
Note
These souvenir sheets on this album page are primarily in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of UNOOSA. The second souvenir sheet, though, is overprinted with an image of a space shuttle and text that says, World Space Week. They made this overprint only on the souvenir sheet for New York, not the ones for the Geneva or the Vienna offices.
