Filiberto, Duke of Savoy
Emanuele Filiberto was the Duke of Savoy from 1553 to 1580. He was a hero of the Savoy family. When he became the duke, the lands of the House of Savoy were occupied and controled by the French. He joined with the Spanish and led troops to victory over France. As a result and through politicking and other efforts (i.e., marrying the French king’s sister), managed to get control over much of his family’s lands, including Piemonte and Aosta, now in northwest Italy. He made Torino (i.e, Turin) the capital and moved there.
Incidentally, I’ve been to Torino a few times and seen a statue of Filberto in a main square. You can see a photo of it on my web site.
All except one stamp on this page of my stamp album commemorate the four-hundreth anniversary of his birth. It’s nice that they celebrated his birth, rather than his death like they did with so many other stamps for other famous Italians.
Remembering the King
The one stamp on this page that is not commemorating Filberto’s birth is the small one in the middle of the bottom row. It’s commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the death of his decendent and then king, Vittorio Emanuele II. They just couldn’t resist having a stamp commemorating a death.
Note
Although Emanuele Filiberto, the person commemorated on most of these stamps, was an interesting character, these stamps aren’t very attractive to me. As a result, I wasn’t too motivated to complete this page before many of the other pages – although I do like the ones on third and fourth row. Plus, most dealers around me were asking too much for these stamps. Nevertheless, since I was tired of seeing this page looking so haphazard and fortunately found someone in Rome selling them at a lower price, I bought them and now have finished with this page.
Contains 14 spots: own 14 – 14 unused, 0 used.
