Postage Due

Italian Colonies, Page LY-19 (GR-2)

The top set of stamps were a new design for postage due, from 1934. They’re not as decorative, but they have brighter colors compared to the ones on the previous page. At their center is the crest for the king and the house of Savoy. The royal crest is flanked by fasces, the symbol of Mussolini’s National Fascist Party.

For the Italian peninsula, these postage due stamps would remain until the end of the kingdom in the mid-1940s. For Libia, though, a new design was introduced. They made the postage due stamps you see in the second set, with a camel and a rider in the desert. It’s a design that was used only in Libia. Perhaps because they thought the colony would last for a very long time.

Note

These stamps aren’t very expensive, although they’re not widely available from Italian stamp dealers. I’m pleased to have the set with the camels. There are so many stamps I’m missing from the Italian colonies. I pick which I want most and can afford first. I’ll eventually get the ones I’m missing on this page.

Footnotes

  • Spot refers to the postion of the stamp on the album page (e.g., 3.2 indicates row 3, position 2).

  • Amt. is an abbreviation for the face amount of the stamp.

  • Own indicates the stamp status: ✓ for unused; ✗ for used or canceled; ⭑ signifies I ordered one; ; ✨ indicates it was bought recently; ✠ means an auction bid is pending; and ◎ is used, and it costs too much for unused.
