Alligator
The American Alligator is one of two remaining species of alligators that aren’t extinct – the Chinese Alligator is the other. There’s a stamp of it on the top row of this album page. It was included in this set of stamps issued in 1971 because it was nearing extinction at that time. However, through the efforts of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and similar agencies for all of the states in the southern part of the U.S. where it’s found, the American Alligator has been saved. In 1987, it was removed from the endangered species list.
As a boy living in Louisiana, I would sometimes fish on the bayou in a pirogue – similar to a canoe, but with a flat bottom and no keel. Often times, while sitting in the boat in low water, an alligator would surface next to me, probably just curious. They’re so tranquil and quiet when they appear out of the water, just watching me for a while before effortlessly disappearing. The first time it was a little scary, but in time I found it to be exhilarating and soothing, looking into the eyes of a dangerous animal that meant no harm to me.
Note
There are also post cards that match these stamps of historic preservation sites. I don’t know where I have them. When I find them, I’ll scan them and add them to this web page. I’m not sure if they’re the same images but larger, or some other historic sites.
Contains 8 spots: own 8 – 8 unused, 0 used.
