Rodi Definitives
Rodi, called in English, Rhodes, is a large island located in the Aegian Sea, a few miles west of Turkey. It’s the largest islands of the Dodecanese islands, and one of the largests in the Mediterrean Sea. It has a population of about one-hundred twenty-five thousand people.
Rodi was an Italian colony from about 1912, when it was taken from Turkey, until 1947, when it became part of Greece. These are Italian stamps were overprinted with Rodi because they were used only on this island.
Note
These stamps are for the island of Rhodes, which is part of the Dodecanese Islands. But in a sense, it’s separate from them. The word, dodecanese means twelve islands – which makes it redundant to call them the dodecanese islands. Of course, the dodecanese consists of fifteen moderate to large islands and one-hundred fifty small islands. So it’s a misnomer or a miscount any way you look at it. Still, for Italy and the Italian stamps, there were twelve islands: Calimno, Caso, Cos, Karki, Leros, Lipso, Nisiros, Patmos, Piscopi, Scarpanto, Simi, and Stampalia.
The island of Rodi makes thirteen. First, I posted the Rodi pages under Aegian Islands, but not in the Dodecanese sub-section. Now I have the Rodi pages included with the Docecanese, but list first as the big brother of them. I’m still undecided as to where I should put them.
