Postage Due
These stamps were used when mail was sent without enough postage. If someone handed in an envelop at the post office, of course, they wouldn’t accept it without the correct postage. However, if someone put an envelop in a public mail box, rather than return the envelop to the sender, they would put postage due stamps for the deficient amount and deliver it, expecting the recipient to pay the cost of them. If they didn’t pay, only then would the envelop be returned to the sender.
Note
For the longest time, I was missing one stamp on this page: the rose violet, eight lira stamp on the fourth row, second position. It’s the most expensive one on this page – but not too excessive. I’ve seen it for sale briefly for as low as about forty euros, and as high as almost two-hundred euros. Considering this is a stamp from 1947 when quality printing standards were pretty high, I don’t see the difference in the range of pricing. Fortunately, I found one for sale on the low price end.
Contains 24 spots: own 24 – 24 unused, 0 used.
Page is finished.
