Planet Earth

U.N. Geneva, Page UNG-92.1 (BL-2)

The year 1992 was declared the International Space Year – meant to coincide with the five-hundredth anniversary of Christopher Columbus and his crew first coming to the Americas. The stamps at the top of this album page show satelites and maybe a space station in space somewhere. The U.N. Secretary General speaking at the World Space Congress in Washington, D.C that year asked people to see the Earth an interdependent planet requiring respect and care for it and its inhabitants – and not to be consumed and conquered as did Europeans in the New World starting from the time of Columbus.

The last two stamps on the bottom row are meant to bring public attention to the CSTD and its work – which for some reason a child-like artwork was determined to be the best design for that. The CSTD or rather, the U.N. Commission on Science and Technology for is part of the U.N. Economic and Social Council. The Commission is meant to provide the Council and thereby the General Assembly with recommendations related to science and technology. They are to regular monitor and review the progress of such, keeping in mind how new science and technology might affect humanity, to consider how policies and actions of the U.N. need to be adjusted.

Note

The stamps on each end of the second row of this album page commemorate two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Sagarmatha National Park in Nepal, and Stonehenge in the U.K. See the Humanity’s Inheritance page of the Vienna album for nore on World Heritage Sites.
