Janina
Janina, or Giannina in Italian, is an ancient city located inland in what’s currently the western side of Greece. The city is now known as Ioannina. These stamps were sold and used from 1909 to 1911, in the final years of the Ottoman Empire. It was a city of many wealthy and educated people. There were many Italian businesses that traded with them. As a result, the Kingdom of Italy established an Italian post office
Note
There aren’t many stamps that were issued for this post office, overprinted Jamina. I’m still working on creating my Post Office Abroad album and expanding my Italian Occupations album. I haven’t printed this album page and mounted the stamps. I’ll do that soon.
Incidentally, I’m particularly interested in these stamps and this city because I had an aunt, my maternal grandmother’s sister, who was called Giannina. Until now, I wasn’t sure of how that was spelled. I assumed it was a nickname and pronounced slightly differently. I need to dig through some family-tree records my mother gave me a long time ago to confirm the name.
