Air Mail

Italian Colonies, Page CY-10 (GR-2)

The stamps on the second and third row are ones that were intended originally for use in the Tripolitania colony, but are overprinted with Cirenaica for use there. You can see the original printing, without the overprint on the Tripolitania page.

Graf Zeppelin Airship’s Voyage

Graf (i.e., Count) Ferdinand von Zeppelin was a German military general and an inventor. While in the U.S. during its Civil War, he rode in a hot air balloon used by the military to observe troop movements. The problem he noticed with hot air balloons was that they could not be directed. This led to the development of an airship that included engines, a keel, and a rudder to be able to steer and propel it forward. He also added a long, large cabin for the transporting of several people. The LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin air ship was one of those airships.

During the 1930s, the Graf Zeppelin airship flew over much of Europe, as well as went to the U.S. and South America. The bottom set of stamps on this album page commemorated its flight over Italy. The images appear to be over open land, presumably in Africa. I’m not sure if he did fly over the Italian colonies.

Note

This page is complete, although the layout is a little too stacked looking. I also probably should separate the first row from the second and third since it’s not overprinted. There’s always something I can do to improve album pages. That’s why in part I prefer the ones already made by Leuchtturm. I can’t meddle with those.
