U.N. Vienna, Page UNV-96.1 (BL-3)

The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, also known as the UNICEF or the U.N. Children’s Fund was established in 1953 to provide humanitarian and developmental aid to children throughout the world.

UNICEF’s work includes providing immunizations, preventing diseases, and treating children and their mothers for many illnesses and viruses. It also includes improving the nutrition and sanitation for children and pregnant women. They help with education and emergency assistance during disasters.

The stamps at the beginning and end of the second row are to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of UNICEF. They depict scenes from folklore and children stories.

Note

The stamps in the middle of the second and third row of this album page are part of a set of stamps commemorating the one-hundredth anniversary of the modern Olympics. You can read more about this and see a souvenir sheet with the same stamps on the next page.
