Sibyl

Italian Colonies, Page LY-4 (GR-2)

The stamps on the first and fifth rows of this album page depict a statue of a Sibyl, which were ancient Greek oracles said to have come from the Libyans.

The Libyan Sibyl was supposed to have been consulted by Alexander the Great when he conquered Egypt. The actual image shown on these stamps is taken from a painting by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel of the Libyan Sibyl.

Diana

Diana of Ephesus, in what’s now Turkey, was also known as the goddess of abundance. She’s a favorite Roman and Greek goddess of the middle east, including Italian colonies – at least in the times of the Romans and Greeks.

Some of the stamps on this page, mixed into the second set, depict Diana. There are also some on the last row of the Red Cross page of this album. I’m not sure of the spelling, though. I suspect it’s an Italian spelling, but they would normally use f instead of ph. Incidentally, Ephesus is the land of the Ephesians to whom St. Paul wrote in the Christian bible.

Note

The reorganizing of these stamps and redesigning of these first six album pages was quite confusing. As an aid to that process and the transferring the stamps from the old pages to the new ones – physically and in the database – I put the catalog numbers inside each stamp frame. That was quite helpful and I may do that for now on whenever I design and especially when I redesign album pages.

Contains 18 spots: own 9 – 6 unused, 3 used.

Footnotes

  • Spot refers to the postion of the stamp on the album page (e.g., 3.2 indicates row 3, position 2).

  • Amt. is an abbreviation for the face amount of the stamp.

  • Own indicates the stamp status: ✓ for unused; ✗ for used or canceled; ⭑ signifies I ordered one; ; ✨ indicates it was bought recently; ✠ means an auction bid is pending; and ◎ is used, and it costs too much for unused.

  • To search by catalog number, go to the search box and enter it in the catalog number box. However, it’s a bit broken; I need to fix it.
