World Health Organization
The World Health Organization (WHO) is a U.N. agency that focuses on international public health. It was established on April 7, 1948, and basically succeeded the Health Organization of the League of Nations – along with a couple of other international agencies – which is partly why it’s headquarters are in Geneva. It wasn’t until 1951 when it received a significant amount of financial and other resources that it started becoming effective.
The purpose of the WHO is to promote health and safety around the world. It sets health standards, monitors world health issues, and provides a forum for related discussions on world health.
There are two stamps on this album page, near the bottom, that were issued on the eighth anniversary of the WHO. They’re the dark red and dark green ones with the Staff of Aesculapius (i.e., the snake wrapped around a stick).
Note
Although these stamps commemorate important agencies and prinicples, they’re pretty drab and boring. It won’t be until 1960 before they start issuing much nicer and more interesting stamp designs.
The problem I see with the U.N., in particular in the earlier days, is that they’re a huge organization of civil servants and diplomats. They have no citizens or true leaders. They’re all trying to be civil, polite, or do and say what they’re told by others. The result is that they often lack passion and thereby a sense of art.
