Geneva Office
The Palais des Nations is the main building where the U.N. offices are located in Geneva, Switzerland. Built in the 1930s, it was originally the location of the headquarters of the League of Nations, the predecessor to the U.N.
Although the U.N. Post Office did not begin issuing stamps from Geneva until October 1969, the U.N. had offices in Geneva since its start in 1946. It not only has a post office, but is also the headquarters to many other U.N. organizations: the International Bureau of Education, the International Labour Organization, the Human Rights Council, the Conference on Trade and Development, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, the U.N. Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Institute for Disarmament Research, the Research Institute For Social Development, as well as the World Health Organization and the World Trade Organization, and several others. Many of these, maybe all of these organizations are featured on U.N. stamps on other album pages. I describe several of them throughout this collection.
Note
Every stamp from this point, though, that is produced for issuance in New York is also produced for use in Geneva – but in Swiss Francs and primarily in the French language. On the second row at the end of this album page is the stamp for the Palace of Nations in Geneva. It’s a pleasant looking stamp showing the U.N. buildings.
I’ve long since wanted to visit the U.N. in Geneva. Living in Milan, which isn’t too far from Geneva – just a few hours train ride away – you’d think I would have been there by now. I did go a couple of times to Geneva, and once with the specific intention to visit the U.N. It was the week after Christmas, the only time the U.N. in Geneva is closed.
It’s my own fault for not checking their schedule before making plans to travel. I have to try again, but next time I’ll check their site for visitor information and schedule.
