Socialist Propaganda

Italy in Transition, Page PG 2 (GR-1)

Thse were special stamps used by the National Republican Guard. They were kind of double stamps, although a pair could not be used separately. On the left side of each is an image of the king, designs from definitives that have already been in use for years in Italy – from before the king surrendered to the Allies. However, the king’s face is overprinted with the initials GNR overprinted – Guardia Nazionale Repubblicana (i.e., National Republican Guard).

The right half of these stamps has images of weapons with a propaganda slogans directed at the soldiers who would use these stamps. The ones with the image of modern naval ships and their guns say in Italian, La disciplina é arma di vittoria, which means, Discipline is a weapon of victory.

The stamps showing an artilery canon along with a paratrooper and other elements say, Armi e cuori devono essere tesi verso la meta, a Mussolini quote which translates to Weapons and hearts must be directed towards the goal – not very inspiring. The stamps with pictures of airplane bombers say, Tutto e tutti per la vittoria, which is Everything and everyone for victory.

Note

These stamps are overprints of stamps from the Kingdom: see the War Propaganda page. They were overprinted again in 1944 with the words, Repubblica Sociale Italiana (i.e., Italian Socialist Republic) – see the Propaganda page.

Contains 12 spots: own 12 – 12 unused, 0 used.
