Love Birds
The stamp at the end of the third row shows two Lovebirds. It’s a type of African parrot, albeit small – only about six inches long. They’re affectionate and sociable, preferring to perch next to each other during the day when not foraging for food, and at night when sleeping. However, they quickly mate and then prefer to perch only next to their mate – hence the common name, lovebirds. Even their original scientific name, Agapornis (the compound of agape ornis), translates literally from Greek to love bird.
There are six species of Lovebird. The paid depicted in the stamp are probably meant to be of the species, Fischer’s Lovebird, which are found primarily in wild around Lake Victoria in the hundreds of thousands. They have been found in Florida and Puerto Rico, but those are escapes that have been breeding.
They’re adorable birds, but you have to buy two of them. They’re too lonely and needy when you have only one: they’ll bond with a human in the home if there’s not another bird and won’t want to leave their side. I’ve had some experiencce in this. It’s cute for a while, but becomes too much.
Note
Besides the lovebird stamps, the beach ball on the beach and the hot-air balloon stamps are nice. They’re excellent Summer time stamps for sending a post card while relaxing on the coast and missing someone back home. I could do without the two turtle-dove stamps and the globe squished into a heart shape. Those look awful.
