Confederate States
In 1861, eleven states of the U.S. seceded and formed a new country, the Confederate States of America. This was a legal act and accepted by the U.S. government: the then president, Abraham Lincoln ordered the withdrawal of U.S. troops from military bases located in the Confederate States. However, before they could leave, Confederate troops fired on them at Fort Sumter, in South Carolina. This act began a war, the U.S. Civil War, which lasted until 1865.
The stamps for this album page were issued by the Confederate States for use in the Confederacy. They depict primarily the CSA president, Jefferson Davis. They also show previous presidents of the U.S. that they seem to have claimed as their history, all from CSA states. The presidents depicted are George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, both from Virginia, and Andrew Jackson from Tennesee. There’s also one stamp showing John Calhoun, a previous vice president from South Carolina.
Note
At this point, I don’t have any of these stamps. They’re expensive, but not outrageously so. Some cost a few hundred dollars unused, with a couple in the thousands. They weren’t printed very well. As a result, I’m not in a hurry to get them. I’m focusing on other stamps in my collection.
