Calimno

The island of Calimno, called currently Kalymnos, is located in the southeastern part of the Aegian Sea. It’s part of the Dodecanese islands that were an Italian colony from about 1912 until 1947. These stamps are Italian stamps overprinted first with Calimno, later with Calino for use only on this island.

It’s a small island known for sponge diving and rock climbing. Over the past decade or so, the population has depleted from about 24,000 to 16,000 people. Incidentally, the American sports anouncer, Bob Costas is a decendent of Kalymnos.

Note

There aren’t many stamps for each Dodecanese island: a batch of some definitives and two commemorative sets – one depicting Ferrucci; another Garibaldi. They’re contained snugly in two album pages. Since the stamps for these island are all the same, except that each island has its own name printed on the stamps, I’ve put the scans of the two album pages for each island on one web page.

Footnotes

  • Spot refers to the postion of the stamp on the album page (e.g., 3.2 indicates row 3, position 2).

  • Amt. is an abbreviation for the face amount of the stamp.

  • Own indicates the stamp status: ✓ for unused; ✗ for used or canceled; ⭑ signifies I ordered one; ; ✨ indicates it was bought recently; ✠ means an auction bid is pending; and ◎ is used, and it costs too much for unused.

  • To search by catalog number, go to the search box and enter it in the catalog number box. However, it’s a bit broken; I need to fix it.
