Kern & McLeod
On the second row, the first stamp commemorates the music composor Jerone Kern, and the second the educator Mary McLeod Bethune.
Jerome Kern
Kern was a musical composor, especially for Broadway musicals in the early part of the Twentieth Century. He worked on musicals with Oscar Hammerstein, Ira Gershwin, and one of my favorite writers, P. G. Wodehouse. He also wrote songs for Hollywood movies, including ones starting Rita Hayworth, Cary Grant, and Fred Astaire.
Mary McLeod
McLeod was an educator who fought for civil rights in the early part of the Twentieth Century. In 1904, she founded a school in Daytona, Florida for African American women. It would later become Bethune–Cookman University. In the 1930s, she was an advisor to President Franklin Roosevelt on African American matters and youth orgnizations.
Note
These aren’t very well done stamps, except for the ones for veterans on the fourth row. I thought about writing something about them, but decided the stories behind some of the people depicted here is better.
