Definitives
The image depicted on the first two stamps, and four others on this page, are of a woman wearing a crown of turrets, towers of a fortress. Italy has been represented by this image known as Italia Turrita.
The towers may represented the walled cities of which Italy is composed – not necessarily united under one nation, but brought together in the spirit of the peninsula and its islands. It’s a symbol that appears on many stamps, and previously for hundreds of years on coins, in paintings and on medals of honor and family crests.
Note
For a while, this page was missing only two stamps: the second and third stamps on the second row. One of them, the one of Julius Caesar, is very similar to two others on this page: all three are purple and have a face value of one lira. The one at the end of the first row has very small fasces in the bottom left and right corners, by the face amounts, while the other two don’t. The first one on the bottom row is identical to the one I had been missing, except that it doesn’t have a watermark. The one I was missing, but I now have, has a watermark on the reverse. It’s little things like this that distinguish one stamp from another and sometimes make it rarer and more expensive for collectors.
Contains 17 spots: own 17 – 17 unused, 0 used.
