Space Peace

U.N. Geneva, Page UNG-75.1 (BL-2)

The U.N. Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) was established in 1958 – after the Soviets launched Sputnik I in 1957. UNOOSA is part of the U.N. Secretariat. It promotes and coordinates peaceful activities in outer space. It also has established laws and regulations for space activities, and assists developing countries in taking advantage of resulting advancements in science and technology for their socioeconomic development. When this first started, it probably seemed like a useless office that would have nothing to do. Now there’s plenty to do.

Note

The top two stamps are meant to bring attention to the work of the UNOOSA. The two stamps in the middle of the second row are the same as those in the souvenir sheet on the next page. See that page for more information about them and the thirtieth anniversary of the U.N.

The outer stamps on the third row are related to U.N. Peacekeeping. You can read more about that on the Peace Keeping page in the New York album. The stamp in the middle of third row and the one at the bottom commemmorate the new country of Namibia in Africa. See an earlier page in this album, the Namibia page for more on Namibia.

Contains 10 spots: own 10 – 10 unused, 0 used.

Footnotes

  • Spot refers to the postion of the stamp on the album page (e.g., 3.2 indicates row 3, position 2).

  • Amt. is an abbreviation for the face amount of the stamp.

  • Own indicates the stamp status: ✓ for unused; ✗ for used or canceled; ⭑ signifies I ordered one; ; ✨ indicates it was bought recently; ✠ means an auction bid is pending; and ◎ is used, and it costs too much for unused.

  • To search by catalog number, go to the search box and enter it in the catalog number box. However, it’s a bit broken; I need to fix it.
