The King & the Fascists
The design of the stamps on this page with the king wearing a military dress uniform, including several medals on his chest, is by Carlo Parmeggiani, like the ones on the Kingdom Definitives page. This stamp design was in celebration of the Vittorio Emanuele III’s royal jubilee: twenty-five years as king of the Kingdom of Italy. That seems to be why he was in dress uniform for the portrait.
Fasces
Benito Mussolini and his followers, the Fascists or rather the National Fascist Party took control of the Italian Parliament and he thereby became prime minister. This led to goal of expansion of Italy, to include colonies like this one. Because of this, you’ll see plenty of stamps with the fasces symbol – like those on the top two rows here. For more on the fascism and the fasces symbol, see the Black Shirts & Manzoni page in my Kingdom of Italy album.
Note
Only one stamp is missing from this page, the one at the end of the second row. It’s the same as the second stamp on that row, except that the perforation is a little different. Still, that difference makes it much more expensive and harder to find. The same is true of that stamp issued in other Italian colonies. I’ll eventually get this one, but for now, until I get other stamps I need for this and my other Italian colony albums, this space will remain empty.
Contains 10 spots: own 10 – 10 unused, 0 used.
Page is finished.
