Law of the Sea

U.N. New York, Page 74.1 (BL-1)

The U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea is an international treaty providing laws for marine and maritime actions. So far, one-hundred sixty-nine countries are members, but not the U.S. – I’m not sure why. Several conferences were held to determine many legal issues and agreed upon methods of handling maritine activities.

The third Conference on the Law of the Sea was held in 1973. The two stamps on the bottom row of this album page are to bring attention to that conference, which lasted for a few years. As part of it, they outlined jurisdiction at sea, including how far offshore is still the territorial waters of a country, and how far out is considered international waters and high seas, and other such things.

Note

Some U.N. stamps like the ones at the botom for the Law of the Sea are made quickly, not too long after some event happens. That may be why they have a simpler design. It takes the U.N. a long time to do things. They can rush if the results are allowed to be simple.
