Air Mail

U.N. New York, Page 74.2 (BL-1)

Almost all of these stamps are air mail stamps. To me, that’s a little odd for the U.N. to specify and charge for air mail service. I know I said this on an earlier page in this album, but there’s nothing much else I can say about these stamps.

There are no airplanes or airports on U.N. grounds, at the U.N. headquarters. I guess you’re paying to get in on U.S. air mail service: they transport a sack of airmail posted envelopes to one of the airports in New York and give it to a U.S. postal distribution facility there for them to put on a plane to go wherever? Still, unless you’re mailing to somewhere in the U.S., all letters regardless of postage paid will go by air.

Note

Again, although I think the air mail designation for U.N. mail is pointless and usually redundant, I do like the look of these stamps. I particularly like the middle two . The bottom one is cheery, and the colors are not primary or standard colors. They have subtle and soft colors, while still being bright. The other middle one, the one with a globe and a silouette of an airplane remind me of the Pan-Am and other airline logos. It brings back memories of the charm of air travel from my childhood.
